Have you ever seen a masterpiece sculpted by nature itself? While we usually explore the desert on wheels, some treasures are best discovered at a slower pace. Tucked away in the northern reaches of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a biological wonder is waiting for you—on foot.
While there are millions of saguaros in the Arizona desert, only about 1 in 200,000 develop the rare, fan-shaped "crest" that makes this specific cactus a local legend. Our Guided Crested Saguaro Hike takes the guesswork out of the trail and leads you straight to this magnificent, 200-year-old specimen.

Why This "Boots on the Ground" Hike is a Must-Do
The Rarity: The Crested Saguaro is a genetic anomaly—a beautiful, swirling "fan" at the top of a towering cactus that looks more like desert art than a plant.
The Scenery: Starting from the Pima-Dynamite Trailhead, you’ll wander through a lush corridor of giant saguaros and dramatic tan granite boulders.
Accessible Adventure: This is a perfect 2-mile round-trip journey. It’s flat enough for a relaxed stroll but scenic enough to take your breath away. It’s the perfect way to stretch your legs between our off-road tours.
What You’ll Experience on Our Guided Walk
Forget staring at a map! Our expert guides handle the navigation while sharing the "secret life" of the desert flora and fauna. On this walking tour, you will:
Find the Hidden Gem: We’ll lead you northeast on the smooth Latigo Trail before veering onto the Sidewinder Trail, where the protected crested saguaro stands in all its glory.
Learn the Lore: Discover the theories behind why these saguaros crest—is it frost, lightning, or a genetic quirk?
Desert Safety & Comfort: We provide the local knowledge (and the best photo angles!) so you can focus on the views rather than the trail markers.
Pro Tip: Keep your eyes peeled! Because we are moving quietly on foot, visitors often spot Gila monsters and desert tortoises along this specific stretch of the Sidewinder Trail that you might miss from a vehicle.

🥾 What to Wear & Bring
To make the most of your hike to the Crested Saguaro, we recommend the following:
Footwear: Sturdy, closed-toe hiking boots or trail shoes with good traction. The Sidewinder Trail can have loose gravel and rocky patches.
Hydration (Mandatory): Bring at least 2 liters of water per person. Even on shorter 2-mile hikes, the Arizona sun evaporates moisture quickly.
Sun Protection: A wide-brimmed hat, UV-rated sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen. There is very little shade along the Pima-Dynamite Trailhead routes.
Clothing: Lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking fabrics. Long sleeves and pants are great for added sun and brush protection.
A Camera: You’ll definitely want to capture the intricate details of the Crested Saguaro!
☀️ Weather & Safety Disclaimer
Your safety is our priority. Please note the following regarding our "boots-on-the-ground" treks:

Heat Cancellations: For the safety of our guests and guides, hikes may be rescheduled or transitioned to a motorized tour if the forecasted temperature exceeds 100°F (38°C).
Monsoon Awareness: During the summer monsoon season, afternoon treks may be cancelled due to lightning or flash flood risks.
Hydration Policy: As noted in our gear list, all hikers must have at least 2 liters of water to begin the trek. Our guides reserve the right to deny participation if a guest is under-prepared for the current conditions.
